The sixth edition of the EFA Global Monitoring Report marks the midterm point in the international commitment to provide a quality education to all by 2015. It assesses progress towards expanding early childhood learning programmes, achieving free and universal primary education, realizing gender parity and gender equality in education, reducing adult illiteracy and improving education quality. It highlights innovative projects and strategies, and underscores the urgency of pushing forward with a common agenda for action. The 2008 Report notes some real gains, especially in getting more children into primary school. Many governments have taken measures to reduce the cost of schooling and tackle obstacles to girls' education. But great challenges remain. There are not enough schools, teachers and learning materials. Poverty and disadvantage remain a major barrier for millions of children and youth. Policies exist that address both access and quality, but they require much bolder action, from the earliest age, to reach the most vulnerable groups and dramatically expand literacy programmes for youth and adults. With statistical indicators on all levels of education in over 200 countries and territories as well as an in-depth analysis of international aid to education, it offers a valuable reference and working tool for policy makers and planners, education specialists, development experts, advocacy groups and those working in bilateral and multilateral agencies.

Children in Poverty PDF Download

Children in Poverty PDF By:Aletha C. Huston Published on 1994-08-26 by Cambridge University Press The number of children living in poverty in the United States increased dramatically during the 1980s and remains high. By 1985, twenty percent of all children lived in families subsisting below the poverty line; percentages for black and Hispanic children were notably higher. The articles in this book attempt to address three main issues: Why so many children grow up in poor families, what the effects of poverty on a child's physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development are, and what role can public policy and policy research play in preventing or alleviating the damaging effects of poverty on children? Most books on poverty focus on analysis of the parents' income, and policies are aimed at self-sufficiency. This book is unique because it is child-centered. It concludes that solving the problem of childhood poverty requires society to assume greater responsibility for pr...

Children's Participation PDF Download

Children's Participation PDF By:Roger A. Hart Published on 1992 by The degree to which children should have a voice in anything is the subject of strongly divergent opinion. There are many examples of children who organize themselves successfully without adult help. Children need to know that along with any rights they have come certain responsibilities. Youth participation in decision making can range from manipulation by adults to child initiated, shared decisions with adults. Researchers can promote an active role for children through Participatory Action Research (PAR). The technique can empower children as research subjects by helping them learn about practical problems and themselves. Experience in the United Kingdom illustrates that children can participate effectively in community planning issues. Moreover, children's lives vary greatly in industrialized and developing countries. Even children in especially difficult circumstances, such as those living in industrialized...
